2024 garden trends

The Garden

The warmth of the sun on your face, bare feet on a freshly-mowed lawn and the promise of lively barbecues with treasured friends... There's nothing like summer in the garden. While garden design trends will always come and go, Holloways furniture – whether for indoors or out – is traditionally crafted, beautifully designed and built to last.

Here are this season's hottest garden furniture trends, which will transform your outdoor space into a beautiful, practical living and dining area for relaxing and entertaining – and all guaranteed to look good for years to come.

1. Sustainability

Chiming with horticulturists' regenerative and grow-your-own movements, sustainable design is a must this year. It's why natural swimming pools, rain borders, reclaimed materials, wildflower meadows and water collecting methods are enjoying a richly-deserved resurgence.

We, as we have done for the past 35 years, continue to work with world-leading garden furniture manufacturers whose exacting standards and ethical values match ours. Materials like FSC-sourced teak, state-of-the-art HPL, handmade rope and long-lasting handwoven outdoor wicker are all sourced responsibly by designers and makers we trust.

2. Multi-use furniture

It's all about function, form and furniture with multiple uses this year – hard-working garden furniture which earns its place in your garden, year after year.

Bramblecrest Chedworth recliners

Think recliners with footstools, which take the more practical, adaptable place of a lounger. Introduce a casual dining set with comfortable corner sofas and dining benches, where everyone can squish up with the crowd descends. Most come with adjustable-height dining tables, to take you from lounging to dining in seconds.

Or source a stylish, lightweight bistro set with contemporary, stackable chairs you can move around the garden as the mood – or the sun – takes you.

3. Outdoor sitting rooms

Over a century ago, Octavia Hill, co-founder of the National Trust, was a keen exponent of the outdoor sitting room – rightly lauding their mental and physical health-giving properties. And since the pandemic, their enduring charm as nature-filled, fresh air sanctuaries has never been stronger.

Arrange outdoor sofas and armchairs with a teak coffee table. Add occasional tables and a parasol for shade, then dress with an outdoor rug, cushions and cosy throws. Whatever your style, style your outdoor living room with the same attention to detail as you would your indoor space. Read how in our Journal.

4. Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise

More is definitely more when it comes to styling your outdoor space. Make room for a bright and breezy outdoor rug. They define your space, add warmth and style and create a welcoming entertaining area for friends and family. Ours are stain-resistant and machine-washable, so you can entertain to your heart's content without worry.

Add throws and cushions – either outdoor, season-proof cushions (there are lots in our showrooms) or indoor cushions in lightweight linens, ensuring you take them in at night. Keeping your guests cosy as the sun goes down will keep them at your table for longer.

5. Smart tech

Integrated tech is the smart move in gardens this year. From parasols with LED lights in the canopy to built-in Bluetooth speakers and patio heaters which double-up as lights, clever technology will elevate your outdoor experience all year round.

Remote-controlled solar lights make life easy as the party moves from day to night, and our new collection of LED candles look incredibly realistic, and won't blow out if the breeze gets up.

6. Curves

Mirroring the interiors trend for all things frilled and wavy this year, curves are making their way into the smartest gardens.

From traditional Lloyd Loom designs to ornately carved benches, elegantly curved corner sofas to contemporary sets with rounded detailing on the arms, responsibly manufactured, sustainable curves are key.

7. Fire pits

There's nothing like cooking over coals. And while barbecues will always have a place in our hearts – and on our patios – there's a new kid on the block: the fire pit table.

Choose a super-sociable design with lots of space for your favourite party animals – we love the Chedworth, with room for 12-14, and its slightly smaller cousin, the Monterey.

Deploy the glass shields, add the optional barbecue griddles and cook up a storm without ever having to leave the table. They're great for creating atmosphere, too – a fabulous focal point for any garden.
