The Christmas decorations have been put away for another year, and my living room is looking sad and bare. It desperately needs some love and attention. I asked one of our interior designers, Annabel, for ideas to refresh a living area after Christmas. "Renew or replace just a couple of small things and you will revive it," she says. Here are her top five clever solutions for an instant room update.

1. Scatter and throw

Carnaby Sofa and Footstool

Scatter cushions provide the perfect opportunity to transform your living room without breaking the bank. Find some bright new cushions, and a contrasting throw, to instantly change the look of your room. A warm welcome means a super-soft, cosy throw draped invitingly over a chair, nothing says 'make yourself at home' better.

Tweeds and wools are cosy for the winter months, and come in some refreshing new colours. Our website is full of ideas.

Use two colours for scatters in different tones and textures.

For an innovative way to select your new scatter cushions, why not keep to just two colours in a range of tones, and contrast the textures.

2. Floor show

A rug will quickly introduce new colours and make your living room feel updated with very little effort. Contemporary wood and stone floors are gorgeous, but do make rugs a necessity. We often find that a well-chosen rug brings a difficult room together. It will soften sounds and feel wonderful when walking barefoot. Place an interesting rug in front of your sofa, chair or fireplace, and see the difference it makes to the whole room.

3. Let there be light!

The Chichester Wine Rack makes a perfect home for a Burlington crystal lamp.

You’re coming home on a winter evening – through the window the warm glow from a beautiful interior invites you in. Annabel believes that lighting is the essential element in creating a warm and welcoming interior. Create pools of light in your living areas, from a variety of sources, to mimic the dappled light and shade that you see in nature, she recommends.

We have many interesting and unusual lamps on our website and many more in our showrooms. And of course, we love to give you ideas!

4. Make it a special occasion

Don't forget the impact of your occasional furniture - coffee and lamp tables, console tables and occasional chairs. Add something new... Change your coffee table for a more contemporary and stylish piece, like this woven rattan Harrow coffee table. The glass top and magazine shelf make it exceptionally practical too.

5. Declutter
